Wasps refuse to play at Edgeley Park

Sale Sharks' game against Wasps had to be called off after London Wasps refused to take the field of play at Edgeley Park.

Notwithstanding the representations of the Wasps coaches to the match referee David Rose, he confirmed that he was satisfied that the game could start, a decision that Sale Sharks completely agreed with. However the Wasps coaches decided that the Wasps team would not start the game and the referee had therefore no alternative but to confirm that the game would not be played.

The management of Sale Sharks are firmly of the view that the game could have been played safely without putting at risk the safety of the players of either team.

James Jennings CEO of Sale Sharks announced to a packed Edgeley Park, some 10 minutes after the game was due to kick off that the game would not be played because of the decision taken by London Wasps. He commented:
