Allett's Place secure in University's Grounds Maintenance Team

Fenner\'s - Allett Regals.jpgOutfields at one of Britain's best-known and most attractive university cricket grounds will be cut this season by two new Allett Regal 36 mowers equipped with trailed seats.

The ground is Fenner's, home of the Cambridge University Cricket Club for more than 100 years and an integral part of Cambridge University's Physical Education Department which purchased the machines.

Replacing two Allett Regal mowers dating from 1998, the two new machines were specified by head groundsman, John Moden, and supplied by local Allett sub-dealer, Rod Widdowson Garden Machinery.

John pointed out that Allett mowers had been maintaining Fenner's turf for around 25 years. "Since the mid 1980s, we've had three new sets of Allett Regal mowers to look after the outfield and are currently using an Allett 20in Shaver to cut the square," he said. "The Regal mowers are ideal for our purposes.

They are heavy, but not too heavy, they give a very good cut and they are not overly technical.

Two specific features of the Regal highlighted by John are the mower's hydrostatic transmission and the inclusion of electric start as standard on its 11hp Honda engine.

"We use the mower without the trailed seat in early spring to give the square its first few rollings of the year," he explained. "It's great to be able to go from forward to reverse at the end of a run at the touch of a lever.

Although the mower's engine has never been a poor starter, push-button start makes the job safer and easier, especially on a damp or chilly morning."
