Improved machinery downtime lowers servicing costs by 70%

Bouma SportNorse are a leading specialist in the delivery of facility management services for both the public and private sector with over 10,000 employees focused on providing a cost-saving based approach to many areas including the Grounds maintenance division. Typically the division is responsible for keeping grounds and green spaces in first class condition, and do this through well-trained people operating the best equipment available.

Due to a noticeable deterioration in the condition of sports pitches and playing fields, Norse made the decision to move away from cylinder mowers (unable to cope with the surface quality and potential debris) towards heavier duty roller mowers. Part of the new fleet included the purchase of four Major TDR1600 Roller Mowers, chosen in part for their rugged construction, but also giving the potential to reduce the costly effect of machine downtime.

Steve Finch (Head of Grounds Services) explains his experience of the new machinery in practice: "The Major TDR1600 Roller Mowers performed inline with our expectations. But what was really pleasing was the immediate impact in costs savings due to reduced downtime. In the first year of operation we've experienced a 70% drop in avoidable costs associated with machine breakages such as replacing bottom blades compared to the previous year."

Another major advantage of operating the TDR1600 Roller Mower is there ability to cope with longer grass, up to 150mm due to the superior gear driven system in contrast to belt driven rotary mowers. Typically Norse make two cuts a month, but with this year's weather pushing up grass growth rates, the company has still been able to maintain a good playing surface even in these challenging conditions.

And, as with all Major equipment, qualified training is always offered to customers, and Norse took full benefit with operators receiving comprehensive product familiarisation training and hands-on use of the products under the guidance of experience machine users who demonstrated the three simple steps to getting started.
