Sports Turf Contractor moves happily from Hiring to owning

Having successfully hired-in a Turfmech SQRL pedestrian greens sweeper for the past three years, Welsh sports turf maintenance and renovation contractor, Wayne Duggan, decided this autumn that the time had come to have his own machine.

Delivered and installed in the first week of October by Turfmech's customer services manager, Graham Probyn, the brand-new SQRL went straight to work on cricket pitch and bowling green renovation contracts across south Wales and also in Devon, where Wayne is currently building a solid client base.

"Thatch is a massive problem both on cricket tables and bowling greens making it imperative to thoroughly remove debris from the surface after scarification and not bury it beneath top dressings," explained Wayne. "Turfmech's SQRL does a fast and effective job clearing up behind my Graden deep scarifier and is ideal also for collecting hollow cores and other turf debris. I used to hire-in a SQRL during the autumn period but the high number of renovation contracts now carried out makes it more cost-effective to run my own machine. It is also readily available to me as and when needed at other times of the year."

Based in Port Talbot, Wayne Duggan began as a cricket groundsman in the early 1990s and is now an ECB pitch advisor for Wales, carrying out a large number of cricket pitch assessments with recommendations during the year. He is responsible also for ground maintenance and wicket preparation at SWALEC South Wales Premier League team, Port Talbot Town Cricket Club.

"I've picked up most of my contract work through word of mouth and personal recommendations," said Wayne. "The addition of the SQRL to my machinery fleet will enable jobs to be completed quicker and more thoroughly and should hopefully bring continued expansion in my client base over the coming years."
