Surrey Groundsman's Association Mentoring Scheme
With the introduction of the Pitch Advisory Scheme by the ECB almost three years ago, the whole area of groundsmanship has been increasingly highlighted. This led to the formation of the Surrey Groundsman's Association (SGA) which now boasts over sixty members from clubs, schools, local authorities and other organisations. The SGA is always looking to support its' members with the running of conferences and demonstration days but wanted to do something particularly relating to education. Therefore with the support of Sherriff Amenity the Mentoring Scheme was set up to help the development of an appropriate and enthusiastic groundsman who links in with Bill Clutterbuck as the mentor. Bill is the Head Groundsman at Guildford Cricket Club where Surrey County Cricket Club always plays a county four day game and a Sunday league match.
Following last years success, 2006 sees three new students accepted onto the scheme, James Bourgeois and Jason Hunter from Charterhouse School, Tom Kilduff from Merton Borough Council, and returning for his second year John Vaughan-Davies from Epsom College. The students will have a program based around their own individual requirements with sessions booked in at appropriate times. Paul Brind (formerly groundsman at The Brit Oval) will join Bill Clutterbuck to act as another mentor within the scheme, this can only add more knowledge and experience to the advantage of the students. With the support of Sherriff Amenity once again in 2006 the opportunities and benefits are ever increasing for the groundsman in the county.
