Another “Groundsman of the Year” award for Surrey’s Bill Gordon
Bill Gordon, Surrey County Cricket Club's Head Groundsman has won the "Groundsman of the Year" award from the ECB for 2006.
This is the sixth time in the past seven years that Surrey have been awarded this coveted prize for the four-day wicket category. Bill Gordon has lead the team who claimed the title in the last four consecutive years.
Gordon has been on the Surrey ground staff since 1964 and since then, has been one of the major reasons why the Brit Oval has produced consistent surfaces, which regularly receive worldwide acclaim.
One of the major beneficiaries of such superb playing conditions this year was the Country's leading run scorer, Mark Ramprakash.
Ramprakash was high in praise for the Brit Oval pitch when he said;
"It's an absolute pleasure to play here and I'm sure most players would agree with that. The pitch is true and as a batsman you can always rely on the consistent bounce. I'd also like to personally congratulate Bill. It's a fitting reward for all of the hard work that he puts in, not just in the summer months, but all year round."
Paul Sheldon, Surrey Chief Executive, added;
"This is another great achievement by Bill and his team. They produce excellent wickets, which allow spectators at the Brit Oval to enjoy watching the best possible contest. A large part of the Brit Oval's strong reputation as a world class venue is due to the wickets produced by our ground staff."
