Choice of mid-mounted mowing decks for McCormick GX/GXH grounds care tractors

By Vikky Morley

McCormick has introduced its first mid-mounted mowing decks for the GX/GXH grounds care tractors to give operators a wider choice of mowing configurations and working widths.

  • Mid-mounted decks with hydraulic lift and four castor support wheels
  • 1.8m with three blades and side discharge with optional rear collection
  • 1.75m extra heavy duty with rear discharge and four blades for finer finish

Until now, operators of the 37hp, 44hp and 49hp machines had a choice of front- or rear-mounted flail or rotary mowers up to 1.8m wide. These are ideal when the mower is frequently removed from the tractor or when it needs to be worked beneath shrubs, into the bottom of hedgerows or under fences. But the new mowing decks make use of the tractor's implement mountings and power take-off situated between the axles to produce a more compact mowing outfit.

The McCormick GX/GXH midi compact tractor is an ideal basis for a mowing machine, adds Mr Percy. It is available with hydrostatic drive or a 16 forward, 16 reverse speed gearbox, giving buyers a choice to suit the type of work involved. Where the tractor is used with draft equipment, such as cultivators, harrows and soil slitters, the mechanical transmission may be the best option for power and traction. But when fine speed control and easy driving characteristics are preferred for aeration, stone burial and similar maintenance operations, hydrostatic drive could be the better choice. "Either way, the tractor makes a great mowing vehicle," says John Percy. "There's plenty of power from the Yanmar engine, good all-round visibility and the controls fall easily to hand."

The new mowing decks are carried on hydraulic lift cylinders and linkage arms arranged to give the effect of 'towing' the deck in work so that it quickly and easily follows surface contours, running on the four castor support wheels that set the cutting height. The 1.8m deck uses a three-blade rotor and has side discharge with the option of a rear collector, while the tougher 1.75m version has four blades and rear discharge. Both versions can be fitted with an optional mulching kit to produce finer clippings and a cleaner surface finish.
