Amenity catalogue 2011Three new mixtures and four new cultivars from the Barenbrug breeding programme join the specialist grass seed breeder's 2011 line-up - full details of which feature in the new BAR Range 2011 sports and amenity grass seed catalogue.

Leading the new mixtures line-up is BAR Trio, an innovative 100 percent fescue blend designed to provide the superior salt tolerance, shoot density and disease tolerance required by links courses.

Containing a unique blend of three top-performing Barenbrug slender creeping red fescues - 40 percent Viktorka, 30 percent Barcrown and 30 percent Barpearl - BAR Trio has been developed through extensive trials across the UK and Ireland, including a pilot programme at Goswick Links in Northumberland.

Barenbrug says that the combined strengths of these top-rated cultivars enables the mixture to cope with the challenging conditions common to coastal links courses.

Another highlight for 2011 is BAR Medal, which combines hard-wearing cultivar Bargold with the fine leaf of Viktorka. Ideal for achieving a very high-quality, fine-leafed appearance while introducing a greater degree of recovery and wear tolerance, this mixtures is perfect for fine turf applications such as golf tees.

Completing the hat-trick of new mixtures is RTF Turf for turf growers. Harnessing Barenbrug's renowned deep-rooting Rhizomatous tall fescue for outstanding tensile strength and soil stabilisation, this mixture now includes the added benefits of new tufted tall fescue Barcesar, which provides high shoot density and a very fine leafed appearance for the species.

What's more, the Barenbrug breeding programme has yielded four innovative new cultivars for the new year.

Barsignum extremely fine-leafed perennial ryegrass and Barcesar tall fescue with superior fineness of leaf and high shoot density for the species have both achieved number one positioning in the Turfgrass Seed 2011 guide.

Barrocky perennial ryegrass for fast germination and recovery, and new slender creeping red fescue Barprince have also further enhanced the mixture synergy of Barenbrug's BAR range, with several mixtures - including BAR Extreme - newly reformulated for 2011 to include these cutting-edge cultivars.

Commenting on the catalogue's launch, research and development manager Jayne Leyland says: "We're delighted to unveil such a strong line-up of new mixtures and cultivars for 2011. While demonstrating our commitment to breeding and producing new and innovative mixtures for the sports and amenity turf market, we also continue to support our products with indispensable advice and information to help customers get the very best from their chosen grass seed solution - something that's essential while the economy and adverse weather continue to challenge us."
