Kevin Pietersen pleads for pitch with more life

But before he turns his attention away from the five-day game, Pietersen issued yesterday what sounded like a genuinely heartfelt plea to the administrators who seem determined to hasten its demise. In particular, and rightly, he focused on the kind of pitches that confront players more often than not these days and that threaten the balance between bat and ball.

The Chittagong pitch, frankly, was a disgrace. Other than allowing statistically conscious batsmen to fill their boots, it offered only blood, sweat and tears for bowlers. No pace, little bounce, no seam movement and no spin. It looked virtually the same at the end of the match as it did at the beginning, thus negating one of the beautiful features of the long game: how to adapt to a surface that deteriorates over time.

Pietersen the batsman was happy for a pitch upon which he could regain some form and he spoke yesterday of his concerns before the previous Test and how, now, he feels somewhere back to his best.
