New Road hit by flood water again

New Road was under several feet of water on Sunday morning

Worcestershire are unlikely to play at New Road again this season after the ground was flooded late on Saturday.

The county are now expected to move their final home games, both against Middlesex in the Pro40 League and County Championship, to Kidderminster.

A deal was signed with the club ground to use their facilities if there was a recurrence of the 2007 flooding.

The county will make an announcement on Monday, when they are expected to confirm the Kidderminster switch.

Worcestershire's problems have been further compounded in that the final games of the season will be Graeme Hick's last matches for the club, and so they were expecting well-above-average crowds.

Last year, in spite of an insurance pay-out of £300,000 and an ECB grant of £75,000, the club made a pre-tax loss of £693,211 as it was estimated that the clear-up and other costs totalled close to £1 million.

The club are not yet guaranteed promotion in the Championship, though they hold a 16-point lead over Warwickshire and a 29-point lead over third-place team Northants.

All three have just two matches remaining in all, while Essex - currently lurking in fifth place - are 42 points behind but have a game in hand.
