The green, green grass of home turf is so lush

Exeter City is just a few strips away from getting a new pitch for the first time in more than 100 years of history - and the groundsman could not be more delighted.

The final piece of turf will be laid at St James Park this morning and the lush new surface that manager Paul Tisdale can send his players out on next season is already almost complete.

Yesterday the fifth and final bulk delivery arrived from the Yorkshire-based turf company and was laid. Just eight rolls, totalling 100 square metres, were left to be put down today.

Club groundsman Clive Pring will then set about trying to get the roots as deep as possible.

He said he is delighted with the work that has been carried out - but stressed that for him the hard work starts now.

He said: "It was supposed to be finished on Monday but they were eight rolls short so are coming back today but we are virtually there.

"To put it into perspective there has been a total of 7,700 square metres laid and there's just 100 left next to the Flybe stand by the away end, which is about the size of an average garden."
