The Headingley Carnegie groundstaff are taking extra precautions

The Headingley Carnegie groundstaff are taking extra precautions this week to ensure the opening game of the engage Super League season goes ahead as planned this Friday between Champions Leeds Rhinos and new boys Celtic Crusaders.

Head Groundsman Jason Booth has studied the latest forecasts for the week and expects up to 20cm of snowfall in the early hours of Monday morning followed by freezing temperatures and rain later in the week.

Booth, who is recognised as being one of the leading groundsmen in British sport, will constantly monitor the situation during the week. Commenting on the forecast Booth said, "Following Leeds Carnegie's game against London Welsh on Sunday afternoon, we will put our frost sheets down on the pitch and the likelihood is they will remain on until just before kick off next Friday. On top of the frost sheets, we will put our new rain sheets, which have proved invaluable this winter in preventing the pitch from getting waterlogged. These will keep the moisture from the snow off the pitch and we will probably take these off in midweek to prevent the water freezing when the temperatures drop.
