Turf Tactics - Sports and Courts Artificial Turf Station
On August 18th the Edgbaston Priory Club hosted 'Turf Tactics', a free day aimed at educating, improving skills, knowledge and techniques for preparation and maintenance of lawn tennis surfaces and clay based sports pitches. Sponsored by leading industry companies and attended by an array of grounds people, Turf Tactics was a great success and enjoyed by all those present.

Held at the home of the Aegon Classic, The Edgbaston Priory Club, the attendees were able to learn from the grounds team who care for the club gardens, eight grass courts, seven artificial grass courts, four American clay courts and three macadam courts.

The day started with an excellent and warmly received presentation by Edgbaston Priory Club's Grounds Manager Dave Lawrence and his Assistant Grounds Manager John Lawrence. Their presentation focused on the management of the club's grass courts and how the team implement what he describes as sustainable and affordable nutrition, maintenance and renovation.

Dan Hughes, Maxwell Amenity's Sales & Marketing Director, presented a brief outline of Maxwell Amenity as a business. This was followed up by a series of presentations from event sponsors: Limagrain, ICL, Sports and Courts, Campey Turf Care Systems and Dennis/SISIS who gave brief introductions to their organisations. The attendees then got a chance to make the most of the great weather outside with a barbeque lunch which afforded networking opportunities and enthusiastic discussion, following the morning's presentations.

For the afternoon session, delegates split into a number of groups. Attendees undertook six educational activities and demonstrations organised at different locations around the Edgbaston Priory Club. Activities included a site tour, artificial & tarmac tennis surface management, benefits of Primo Maxx growth regulator, aeration techniques, seed selection & conservation management and end of season scarification and renovation. Each station presentation was led by an industry expert and focus groups used the opportunity to ask questions relevant to their particular facilities requirements.

"This was the first event we have organised in this format, and to have over 60 attendees on the day from the tennis, schools and cricket community was brilliant. Part of our company's ethos is to facilitate and encourage education and networking and the attendees gave us great feedback from the day.

We would like to extend our thanks to the Edgbaston Priory Club's Grounds Manager Dave Lawrence and his team for their efforts and use of facilities to showcase such an interesting and enjoyable day."
