Wales boss Speed slams slippery Millennium Stadium surface as a 'park pitch'

Press Releasein Football

Gary Speed compared the Millennium Stadium's playing surface to 'a park pitch' and claimed he may not return to play there unless it is brought up to scratch.

The new Wales boss, his assistant Raymond Verheijen and captain Aaron Ramsey all complained about the pitch as England won 2-0 in Speed's first home fixture.

Speed warned that Wales will play elsewhere if the stadium authorities cannot guarantee a pitch that is fit for purpose.

'At the start of the week, it looked like a park pitch,' said Speed. 'But I have to say I feel sorry for the groundsman. The rugby's been on here for six weeks. And they are not just playing on it, they are training on it every day.

Holding out: Speed has threatened to boycott the Millennium Stadium unless the playing surface improves

'We pay for use of the stadium, so in future we are going to need certain assurances that we can play football on it.

'It was much better (for the match), it certainly wasn't good enough on Monday - but there were still a lot of people slipping about on it. So if we are going to continue to play here we need it to be in a playable state.
