A large "panther-type" cat has been spotted in the Highlands, police have said.

Northern Constabulary are investigating two reported sightings of the creature in the past week.

Officers warned members of the public not to approach the animal and to report any sightings to police.

A member of the public reported seeing a "very large, muscular black cat with a square head" in the Fendon area of Tain, Ross-shire, on Thursday.

The animal was described as about 4ft long with a 2ft-long tail.

A large cat was also spotted in Dornoch, Sutherland, on Saturday. The animal was seen in an area between the greenkeeper's shed at Dornoch Golf Club and the nearby caravan park at about 8am.

There have been several claims of big cat sightings in Scotland in recent years.
