Yorkshire CC: We're in the dark over pitch, says Moxon

Martyn Moxon admits the new Headingley wicket is an unknown quantity for him and his Yorkshire players as they seek to find a winning home formula at long last.

The Tykes opened their home County Championship campaign against Somerset in Leeds today, seeking their first four-day win at headquarters since way back in April 2008.

The much-maligned Headingley surface has been deemed as too batsman-friendly in recent years, with eight of the last 10 first-class matches ending in draws.

In a bid to sort out the flat, benign surface, chief groundsman Andy Fogarty was busy in the off-season, taking the top inch and a half off the wicket.

And with heavy rollers not allowed to be used once a four-day game starts, possible natural deterioration of the Headingley wicket - allied to the work of Fogarty - could yield more positive results at long last.
