Giving back: Ganton Golf Club Experience Week
An innovative pilot initiative at Ganton Golf Club has demonstrated how individual clubs can play a meaningful role in developing the next generation of greenkeepers.

In an industry built on shared knowledge, mentorship and collaboration, it is always encouraging to see education delivered in fresh and purposeful ways. Earlier this year, the North Yorkshire club quietly showcased just how powerful club-led learning can be, hosting a pilot initiative designed to give something back to the profession.
The Ganton Experience Week was born not from obligation, but curiosity. Course Manager Simon P Olver and his team wanted to explore whether a single venue could deliver meaningful, immersive training for working greenkeepers - and whether doing so might help stimulate wider discussion across the industry.
Over the course of his career, Simon has benefited from both formal education and the informal support of peers. This time, the aim was to reverse that process.
“If we could deliver a pilot event successfully, it might help illustrate what’s achievable,” Simon explains. “The world is evolving, and to stay relevant we have to think differently. What worked before might not work as well now.”
With many clubs now operating at a high technical and professional level, Simon recognised an opportunity to create compact, intensive learning experiences that complement - rather than replace - traditional greenkeeper education.
A collaborative approach
The concept gathered momentum through Simon’s long-standing working relationship with Ian Butcher, Programme Leader at Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC). As an ambassador for the college, Simon regularly supports SRUC’s work, and discussions soon turned towards the potential for a joint initiative.
Together, they developed the idea of a week-long experience at Ganton that would align perfectly with SRUC’s online learning model. This ensured strong uptake for the pilot, with most delegates attending through SRUC, alongside one additional greenkeeper from Alwoodley Golf Club.
In total, eight delegates took part, all in full-time employment within the industry. Their commitment was clear, with some travelling significant distances - including journeys from London to Machrihanish, St Andrews to Edinburgh, and Cork in Ireland.

Benefits for everyone involved
While the Experience Week was designed primarily for visiting greenkeepers, its impact extended well beyond the delegates. Simon was clear that the Ganton team themselves should gain just as much from the initiative.
Throughout the week, Ganton staff took responsibility for planning and delivering hands-on sessions. For many, this was a new challenge - and one that helped develop leadership, communication and organisational skills.
Reflecting afterwards, there was a strong sense of pride within the team. Using their expertise to positively influence others proved both rewarding and motivating, with discussions already underway about how future events could be refined and expanded.
The full Ganton experience
From the outset, it was important that the event delivered a genuine sense of place. Keeping numbers small allowed all delegates to stay on site in Ganton’s dormy accommodation, fully immersing them in the club’s environment and culture.

The programme followed a hybrid format, blending hands-on workshops, course walks and classroom-style presentations. Mornings focused on practical learning, with delegates split into two rotating groups covering irrigation function, installation and setup, alongside traditional revetted bunker construction.
Afternoons broadened into a wide range of subjects, including ecology, wetting agents, biostimulants, seed selection, data collection, irrigation strategy and personal development. Course walks reinforced classroom learning, helping to firmly place theory into a real-world context.
A number of industry professionals also generously contributed their time, delivering presentations in the clubhouse and adding further depth to the week.
Industry support
Strong backing from industry partners proved vital to the event’s success. From the outset, Simon was confident that collaboration would help keep costs to a minimum without compromising quality.

Agrovista Amenity kindly sponsored the week, covering catering costs and providing all delegates with welcome packs. Ganton Golf Club supplied accommodation, facilities and the opportunity for participants to enjoy a round on the course.
Simon is particularly keen to acknowledge the support of Tom Wood from Agrovista Amenity, whose involvement helped ensure the week ran smoothly. Feedback since the event has been extremely positive, reinforcing the value suppliers place on practical, grassroots education.
The value of connection
While education formed the foundation of the week, networking quickly emerged as one of its most valuable outcomes. Evenings spent together on site allowed delegates and staff to share experiences, career journeys and greenkeeping stories - often over a well-earned drink.
Simon notes that some of his closest professional friendships were formed through similar opportunities earlier in his career.
Feedback from attendees exceeded expectations, with many describing the week as genuinely career-enhancing. For Simon and the team at Ganton, the response has been both humbling and encouraging.
“Passing on what you know to others is a real career highlight.”
A model with potential
While this approach to education may not suit every club, the pilot has clearly demonstrated what is possible. The flexible format means similar initiatives could be adapted to suit local audiences, specific topics or shorter timeframes.
There is also growing recognition that education funding does not need to
focus solely on large-scale events. With sufficient interest, smaller, independent training initiatives could become more widely supported.
For now, the Ganton Experience Week stands as a compelling example of what can be achieved when passion, collaboration and a willingness to try something different come together. What began as a simple idea has the potential to grow far beyond a single week - and a single club.

Delegate feedback
“Attending the immersive training week at Ganton was a privilege and an experience that exceeded all expectations. The heritage and character of the club created the perfect backdrop for learning and professional growth.
The programme combined insightful classroom sessions with invaluable hands-on experience, covering everything from irrigation fundamentals and turf management to leadership and emerging technologies such as AI. The openness and generosity of Simon Olver and the Ganton team was inspiring, and the support from SRUC and Agrovista added real depth to the week.
Beyond the technical learning, the networking and hospitality were outstanding. I left Ganton inspired, better equipped, and ready to raise the bar at Muskerry. An unforgettable experience.”
