Johnsons 4Turf

4TURF is a new turf type of tetraploid perennial ryegrass bred especially for rapid installation and unique stress tolerance. Tetraploid ryegrasses have long been known to show better stress tolerance and disease tolerance compared to diploids. Now these advantages have become available for turf grasses as 4TURF.

Description

Johnsons 4Turf

Johnsons J 4Turf uses a tetraploid perennial rye-grass bred especially for rapid installation and stress tolerance. The tetraploid cultivars used in J 4Turf establish rapidly even under low soil temperatures and root deeply to assist with drought tolerance and disease resistance. The diploid cultivar in the mix delivers high shoot density and increased wear tolerance.

Directions for Use

Sowing Rate (g/m2) Overseeding Rate (g/m2) Mowing Height (mm)
35-75 10 - 50 Down to 12

Sowing Guidance

  • Prepare the surface before sowing ensuring that:
    • Stones & weeds are removed.
    • There is sufficient drainage.
    • The surface is level and firm.
    • The surface is moist.
  • Sow the seeds evenly, using the correct sowing rate to a depth of approximately 10 mm.
  • Ensure that the surface remains moist for at least 2 - 3 weeks.
  • Make the first cut when the grass is 5 - 6 cm tall and tillering has started.

Overseeding Guidance

  • Prepare the existing turf by removing excess thatch and limiting irrigation and fertilisation.
  • Apply using the correct overseeding rate.
  • For best results use a disc seeder or a studded seed roller.

Better sward quality after stress

In southern and continental areas in Europe 4TURF shows better recovery from both drought and heat stress as well as winter stress. Thus it outperforms ordinary diploid ryegrasses.

Rapid installation

4TURF seeds are 1.5 times bigger than normal turf grasses. 4TURF produces stronger seedlings with faster establishment, resulting in less chances for the establishment of weeds. Thus 4TURF is the perfect oversowing choice for perennial ryegrass applications. 4TURF is very well suited for oversowing Bermuda in the transition zone resulting in a fast establishment and excellent turf quality but no more clippings.

Johnsons 4TURF Disease Resistance

Better disease resistance and stress tolerance

4TURF has an improved disease resistance, both under warm and cold conditions. In DLF trials from Scandinavia to the Mediterranean it has proven to be more resistant against F.E. rust, Fusarium, Elminthosporium, Drechslera, and Red Thread. It is very well suited for extensive management conditions.

Good wear tolerance

In German trials 4TURF varieties Double and Tetragreen are rated 8 sport/wear conditions using a 1-9 score. The shear strength is enhanced due to the deeper root systems.
