May Sports Pitch Maintenance Diaries

Editorin Industry News

Sports covered are bowls, cricket, rugby, football, golf and tennis

The weather hasn't helped groundsmen and greenkeepers recently. The cold temperatures in April have slowed grass growth considerably, with some parts of the country only needing to cut once a week when normally, at this time of year, it would twice or three times!

Ideally, we need May to bring us some prolonged warmth, but the forecasts aren't all that promising.

The purpose of these diaries is to offer advice and guidance on the sort of work you should be contemplating to keep your playing surfaces in a good condition and fit for purpose.

Despite the weather, this time of year will be busy for all groundstaff - summer sports coming into a new season, and winter sports undertaking renovations.

No two sports grounds are the same, they all have their own set of unique requirements depending on the level of sport played, type of pitches, current condition, amount of fixtures being catered for and, more importantly, the budgets and resources available to maintain the facilities.

It is these wide ranging variables that make our industry challenging and interesting.

Don't forget, we have other areas of the website where you can find advice on pests and diseases and, of course, our Online Store, where you can purchase professional products to help you to produce even better surfaces.
