New Sports pitch opened
Staff, pupils and parents from St Colman's Primary School in Annaclone have been joined by a range of personalities to officially launch their new sports pitch.
The development has been created with a grant of £25,589 from the Big Lottery Fund's PE and Sport programme and ensures sport can be played throughout the year.
The pitch was officially opened by Breidge Gadd, Big Lottery Fund NI Chairperson and Bishop J. McAreavey.
The Board of Governors and pupils were joined by Catriona Ruane, Minister for Education, Helen McClenaghan, Chief Executive of the Southern Education and Library Board, Mike Reith, Director of Leisure Services Banbridge Council, representatives from Down and Ulster GAA, and several local councillors to help celebrate the opening.
The pitch comes complete with new drainage and stop nets, and goalposts donated by the contractor, John O'Hare.
This will allow sports such as gaelic, football, netball, hurling and basketball to be played at the school and will mean activities are not limited by bad weather.
In due course, the extended local community will also get the opportunity to use the facility and participate in sporting events and competitions.
Speaking at the launch, Kevin Donaghy, principal of St. Colman's Primary School, said: "I am really pleased that all the hard work has come to fruition.
"All pupils, staff and parents at the school are delighted with this facility which will provide endless opportunities for all of our pupils and indeed children from the local community.
"A big thank-you to all involved. I think it is plain for all to see the outcome of the support and initiatives of the Big Lottery Fund!"
Breidge Gadd, Big Lottery Fund NI Chairperson, said: "I am delighted to be able to join pupils and staff at St. Colman's Primary School to launch this facility.
"I am sure that pupils and the local community will enjoy the benefits of it. The National Lottery grant shows how investing money in sports facilities available both to schools and local people can transform the quality of life in communities."
