writtle2.jpg41 Students were presented with laptops after successfully completing their FE course and choosing to progress onto a foundation or honours degree course at Writtle College. A progression campaign offered students the incentive of a laptop and £500 from their course fees for choosing to progress onto higher education at the College. The progression campaign was promoted at the Writtle campus and their sister College, Shuttleworth.

The laptops were presented to students on campus on Wednesday 12th December. Jeremy Strong, Head of Higher Education at the College, spoke first wishing the students the best of luck during their continued education. Progression students were from all four schools at the College; Design, Equine and Animal Science, Sustainable Environments and Horticulture. The head of each school presented students with their laptops.

The laptops will help students with their studies at College, one student, Janette Cannon, who is studying for a honours degree in Garden Design commented "I will be using my laptop for research as well as to create a portfolio of my College work, I have already added a programme to sketch drawings on my laptop and have designed some of my own Christmas cards."

The campaign was run within the College's Aimhigher and Widening Participation initiatives, which ensure that those with the potential to benefit from higher education have the opportunity to do so.

The campaign was aimed at raising awareness among students about higher education study. Often students believe that only the traditional A Level route will allow them to follow on to higher education.

Claudia Carey, Aimhigher Development Officer at the College said: "Part of the reason for offering the incentive was to reward our FE students for the hard work and commitment they had given the College throughout their studies. Primarily however many FE students are not aware that they are able to progress to HE with, for example, a BTEC National Diploma. Therefore, the campaign will have opened their minds to opportunities in HE thus enhancing their future career opportunities."
