William Hardiman, who has died aged 90, was the former head groundsman at Cardiff Arms Park.
Bill, as he was known to his friends, spent most of his working life tending the football and rugby pitches of South Wales before landing his "dream job" at the national ground.
Such was the respect he commanded from his peers, he was awarded an MBE for services to sport in 2003.
Born October 7, 1920, Bill suffered ill health as a baby and was not expected to survive.
