100 firefighters tackle devastating Stourbridge Golf Club wildfire
A huge blaze near Stourbridge Golf Course saw about 100 firefighters battling the fire which spread rapidly through dry grass and woodland, setting alight six homes.
As the UK recorded its hottest day of the year yesterday, fire services across the West Midlands said they experienced extreme levels of demand.
The fire started near the golf course, spreading across huge areas of land and affecting properties, leading to many people being evacuated.
An update from West Midlands Fire Service this morning said crews were “making progress” and “tactically working across several different areas of the site”.
Chief fire officer Simon Tuhill, of West Midlands Fire Service, said the huge blaze, which forced some people to flee after it started tearing through homes, was “one of the most significant” incidents the region’s fire service has ever dealt with.
Crews are continuing to work across several areas, including Racecourse Lane, Norton Road, Ounty John Lane, Quarry Park, Brunswick Gate, Melrose Drive and Worcester Lane, monitoring and damping down hotspots.
Several areas have also been isolated by Cadent.
There are still pockets of smoke emerging across the affected site, which crews are dealing with as they arise.
