Why autumn recovery is one of the most important periods of the year
For turf managers across the UK and Europe, this summer has once again highlighted just how unpredictable our growing seasons have become.
Periods of prolonged drought, high temperatures and restricted rainfall have placed considerable pressure on every type of managed turf surface. Whether maintaining golf greens, football and rugby pitches, cricket squares, racecourses or community sports fields, many managers have spent the past few months balancing irrigation, playability and presentation simply to keep surfaces performing.
While cooler temperatures and autumn rainfall may bring welcome relief, the challenges facing turf are far from over.
In many ways, autumn is the most important period of the year. It is the opportunity to repair the hidden damage caused by summer stress, rebuild plant health and prepare surfaces for the demands of winter and the following growing season.

The effects of drought extend well beyond what we see above ground.
Extended periods of drought stress reduce root development, limit nutrient uptake and deplete the plant’s natural energy reserves. Even where irrigation has maintained acceptable turf quality, the grass plant itself may be significantly weaker than it appears.
