Bite the bullet with battery power

A keen gardener has recently made the switch from petrol to battery power and it has proven to be no mistake! She encourages anyone still using petrol-powered garden equipment for commercial or home garden maintenance should just pick one of EGO's battery-powered tools and run with it!

Abby Baumber developed a passion for gardening from an early age, helping her mother and grandfather around the garden to 'earn her keep'. Despite this, Abby spent the first 12 years of her career working in childcare, from working with children, to marketing and management. Having progressed to the role of Deputy Manager, Abby also managed an After School and Holiday Club where she very quickly realised the enjoyment and fulfilment she received when spending time outside and warranted a drastic change in career. Soon after, she decided to bite the bullet and to take up a career in gardening.

After partnering with another gardener, Abby decided it was time to go solo and to start up her own business - Adorn Gardening was born. Abby spent many hours spent coming up with the name of her business. Wanting customers to instantly recognise her passion for redesigning and personalising a client's outdoor space, she decided Adorn was the perfect name to represent her attention to detail. Having always used petrol-powered outdoor garden equipment to prune, weed and refurbish spaces, Abby introduced battery-powered equipment from EGO to see if petrol had finally met its match. Having initially purchased the EGO Power+ Line Trimmer with Powerload, Abby then went on to buy the EGO Power+ Multi-Tool Range complete with Commercial Backpack and a selection of smaller batteries.

Respecting others

The decision to make the switch from petrol to battery power has proven to be no mistake. On a day to day basis, Abby is conscious of disturbing the neighbours when firing up her equipment at 8am. However, since she has started using battery-powered outdoor equipment from EGO, the worry of upsetting the neighbours and clients in and around the gardens in which she works is no longer a concern.

"As you would normally associate noise with power, it was the first thing that I had to get used to," Abby said. "The EGO Power+ Line Trimmer is so quiet, instead of hearing the petrol engine, you only hear the line turning around instead! Ditching petrol has not only made my job more efficient, but it also means I am able to work safely, without affecting the environment or the health of my clients."

Limited vibration

Abby (pictured above) admits that her decision to switch to battery was partly encouraged by the testimonial of another happy battery user. Having explained his enjoyment of using EGO Power+ products and mentioning the very little vibration, her gardening peer introduced Abby to the battery-powered tools as a solution for injuries sustained from excessive Hand-Arm Vibration (HAV).

Having previously suffered from trigger finger after long periods of strimming, Abby's decision to make the switch to battery-power was reinforced by its reduced level of vibration. Abby noticed a difference after a few weeks of using EGO's Power+ Line Trimmer - the ergonomic, simplified 'pull trigger' feature which requires far less strength, made it far easier and more comfortable to handle.

"When I had trigger finger, I found it very difficult to pick-up my tools to prune the garden. But ever since I've started using EGO, I haven't had any issues with muscle tightness because there's far less vibration involved."

"I can definitely say that switching to battery has improved my Hand-Arm Vibration. I am no longer experiencing any problems and because the tools are light, I am also able to pick them up and move them comfortably".

Pre-conceptions

Although the run-time was an initial concern for Abby, she was shocked by the power and performance that battery delivered.

"The power of EGO products was certainly surprising. Having purchased a 2.5Ah, 5Ah and commercial backpack, I'm able to get through tasks easily as the variety of batteries makes it easy for me to choose the most suitable one for the job. They are so easy to replace and you can easily check how much battery life is left by a quick push of the button on the back".

"The upfront cost of battery-power is typically what turns gardeners away from purchasing, but when you consider the long-term savings, like no longer having to go buy and carry fuel, it works out cheaper and far more convenient."

"Ignore what others may say about battery power and try it for yourself. Make your own decision because, like me, it was a choice I did not regret. I'd suggest getting your hands-on demo kit, go to a familiar job and experience it for yourself. Go for battery, it's equally as powerful, just without the noise, fuss and fumes".
