Rain rain go away - Issue 125 - Editor's Foreword

Kerry Haywoodin Foreword

The incessant rain and sharp overnight lows continue to test us, but what stands out most in these conditions is the professionalism of today’s turfcare teams.

Planning has become more dynamic. Budgets are tighter. Expectations remain high. Yet the standard of surfaces across golf courses, sports pitches and amenity spaces continues to impress - even through challenging weather cycles.

It’s been encouraging to see social media filled with messages of support and shared understanding during this familiar late-winter pattern of cold, damp mornings, low light, swamped surfaces and soil temperatures reluctant to rise.

By the time this issue lands on desks, hopefully milder spells will be edging in, with daytime temperatures pushing into double figures. Those small increases can make a significant difference underground - stimulating root activity and creating the first genuine opportunities for early-season preparation and planning.

This issue reflects the ever-changing weather patterns we are all navigating, and the resilience and adaptability they demand of turf professionals. Our cover feature explores practical approaches to moisture management and how it has evolved into a critical performance variable rather than simply a routine maintenance task. You can read the in-depth article from page 8.

Also in this issue, we feature industry-respected Gary Barwell (Head Groundsman at Edgbaston Stadium), who shares his top tips for cricket pitch preparation. They don’t just happen - they’re planned, nurtured, protected and, quite often, worried over. Read his expert insights on page 56.

As always, our aim is to bring you a technical, topical, informative and engaging read. If you’re reading online or have inherited the magazine from a colleague, get in touch using my email below and we can send it directly to you.

Here’s to steadier skies ahead – and to your continued dedication in delivering first-class surfaces.
