Search for missing Dundalk FC groundsman ends tragically in Crossmaglen

Tributes have been pouring in following the tragic death of a popular League of Ireland groundsman on Sunday.

Harry Taaffe, who worked for Dundalk FC, was last seen leaving his home on Saturday, at around 10am, before a missing persons appeal was issued on Sunday morning.

Sadly, that search was halted on Sunday evening after a body was found at a property in the Crossmaglen area.

Confirming the tragic news, a spokesperson for Dundalk FC said: "We're absolutely devastated to confirm that Harry Taaffe has tragically passed away. Our deepest condolences to Maria, Orla, Elaine, Shane and Harry's family."

"He was an integral part of our club and his passing has left us numb. Rest easy H. You'll live forever in our hearts."

Mr Taaffe was also a videographer for the Club, and often studied opponents.

Some of those paid their own tributes to the popular figure.

Galway United wrote: "So sorry to hear this sad news. Harry always made us feel so welcome in the TV gantry at Oriel Park and on one occasion when our camera failed, he provided us with his own footage.

"An absolute gentleman. May he rest in peace. Condolences to his family, friends and Dundalk FC."

Shamrock Rovers added: "Such tragic and devastating news, we offer our deepest condolences to Harry's family and friends. Always a familiar and welcome face at Tallaght Stadium. May he rest in peace."

Bohemians commented: "Deepest condolences from everyone at Dalymount Park to Harry's family, friends, club colleagues and fellow Dundalk supporters."

"Keeping you all in our thoughts at this very difficult time."

St Patrick's Athletic added: "We are very sorry to hear this sad news. Our thoughts & prayers are with Harry, his family & friends & everyone at Dundalk. May he rest in peace."

While Donegal-based FinnHarps described it as "dreadful, dreadful news".
