The R&A Sustainable Golf Team has appointed Dr Andy Owen as Research Manager to strengthen its research and innovation initiatives aimed at supporting the long-term sustainability and resilience of golf courses worldwide.

Global Strategy and Agronomic Challenges

In his new role, Dr Owen will help shape and manage The R&A’s global sustainable golf research strategy. He will identify and oversee research addressing key environmental, resource, and agronomic challenges that threaten the future of golf course management.

By building a deeper evidence base, the initiative seeks to assist the broader golf industry as it adapts to evolving operational and climate-related conditions.

Industry Background and Expertise

Dr Owen brings extensive experience across turfgrass research, education, and the global sports turf industry. His background includes 12 years as International Technical Manager at ICL, along with prior roles at STRI, Myerscough College, and Bangor University.

Key Initiatives and Practical Implementation

A major focus of the role will be translating scientific research into practical guidance, enabling golf course operators to implement evidence-based management decisions.

Dr Owen will lead the continued evolution of Golf Course 2030 (GC2030) and support The R&A’s involvement in the International Turfgrass Research Initiative (ITRI). He will work alongside The R&A’s wider Sustainable Golf team, including Dr Brett Morris, to deliver global agronomy research and best practices for federations, clubs, practitioners, and industry partners.
