The UK is set for a severe wintry plunge after the coming weekend, with sub-zero temperatures and widespread snow forecast.
Cold polar air will dominate from Monday of next week (26th) - affecting Scotland and the east at first and the rest of the UK soon after.
Accumulations of snow - especially in the north and east are expected to be significant, producing widespread dislocation of the transport system and a serious impact upon outside sporting events.
