sportsurf conference 2007 017.jpgSportSurf's new biennial conference STARSS (Science, Technology and Research into Sports Surfaces) was a resounding success with over 70 delegates attending the two-day conference at Loughborough University on 17/18 September this year.

The conference provided a unique opportunity for the discussion of current research ideas and findings amongst some of the world's leading academic sports research scientists.

The conference was aimed at those involved in all aspects of sports surfaces including: academic research; industrial research; facility design & procurement; construction, management/operation and funding; sport governance; accredited surface testing; standardisation; player/athlete coaching and welfare; and sport and exercise sciences.

Presentations were given on a wide range of topics including (but not exclusively):

• Player-surface interaction

• Ball-surface interaction

• User perceptions

• Design and construction - innovations

• Biomechanics - modelling, instrumentation

• Laboratory and field testing - interpretation, innovation, spatial and temporal studies

• Environmental impact - sustainability, value engineering

• Durability - mechanical wear, measurement, environmental issues, maintenance

With over 20 research papers presented there was plenty to talk about during the two conference days. As Editor of Pitchcare I found the conference very rewarding and stimulating. However, I think it is important that these Research Papers are available to a wider audience, particularly practicing Groundsmen and Greenkeepers who are always under constant pressure to deliver high quality-playing surfaces.

So with the kind permission and cooperation of SportSurf, Pitchcare will be able to share with you a number of papers presented at the Conference.
