Fingers crossed for Boxing Day meet

Racegoers will be keeping their fingers crossed that the flagship Boxing Day horse racing event at Market Rasen will not be cancelled for the second year running.

Last year's event fell foul of frost and following the recent heavy snow and freezing temperatures race officials may again be forced to call off the racing.

As the Market Rasen Mail went to press groundsmen at the racecourse were still monitoring the situation closely and hoping for a further thaw.

A spokesman said: "There is nothing we can do at the moment I am afraid, we just have to wait to see what mother nature has in store."

With more than 11,000 people expected to descend on the town from all over the region the day after Christmas, it is always one of the county's most popular sporting events of the entire year.
