Getting Personal with Peter Flewitt

Editorin People

Peter Flewitt - a kind perfectionist, unless you ask him to clean anything!

Who are you? Peter Flewitt, Head of Grounds and Gardens at Trent College.

Family status? I've got a wife, and we have a baby girl on the way.

Who's your hero and why? Andrew Flintoff. I love cricket, and when I worked at Trent Bridge, the chance to meet him was special.

What would you change about yourself? I'd be thinner.

What's your guilty pleasure? The X Factor. It sounds bad to say it out loud, but it's quite a funny show.

What's been the highlight of your career so far? Working on the 2005 Ashes and seeing that victory. It's good just to be able to say 'I was there'.

What are your pet peeves? Dog walkers that don't collect the poo, high winds and autumn leaves.

If you could go anywhere right now, where would it be? Rhodes (where we got married). I've only just been there, but it'd already be nice to go back again.

What's the best part of your job? Being outside.

… and the worst? Heavy rain… I like to wear my shorts, as I imagine most groundsmen do, and I don't like the idea of having to put the long trousers back on.

Do you have a lifetime ambition? To be the best groundsman that I can be, and to have a happy career.

Favourite record, and why? Candy by Paolo Nutini. It was the first dance at my wedding.

Who would you choose to spend a romantic evening with? Kimberley from Girls Aloud.

If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do? I'd buy Ilkeston Town Football Club.

If you could be anyone for a day, who would it be and why? Anthony Joshua. I imagine it would work out being a cool day. Just not on the day of a fight!

Do you have any bad habits? I don't mow my own lawn… or, to be honest, clean anything. You wouldn't be able to tell it's what I do for a living.

... or any good ones? I'm very kind.

Do you go to bed worrying about the next day's workload? Absolutely. Before a big fixture, or when we're behind on the work.

What are you reading at the moment - hard copy or online? It's a book about becoming a dad. My favourites are the Harry Potter books.

What's the best advice you have ever been given? Find something you enjoy, and do it. My dad worked in a factory and hated it. That stuck with me.

What's your favourite smell? Pizza.

What do you do in your spare time? I'm the chairman of my local football club. I help to coach the under-11s too.

What's the daftest work-related question you have ever been asked? 'Can I use that area to warm up?' It was the first XI square in October.

What three words would you use to describe yourself? Dedicated, kind, perfectionist.

What talent would you like to have? I'd be better at football. An outfielder, because strikers earn more money. I'd like to be able to score a lot of goals.

What law/legislation would you like to see introduced? I'd like to keep carbendazim.
